1. Width: Finding the Right Footprint

In our finder, you’ll see widths ranging from 205mm to 425mm.

• Standard Fitment (295 – 315): The backbone of the UK haulage industry. Most tractor units and trailers run on these sizes for a balance of stability and fuel economy.
• Super Singles (385 – 425): Primarily used on steer axles of heavy rigs or on trailers. These provide a massive footprint, increasing stability and load-bearing capacity.
• Light Commercial (205 – 285): Designed for 7.5t vehicles and delivery vans that require high-pressure durability with a smaller physical size.

2. Profile: Balancing Comfort and Compliance

The profile is more than just a measurement; it dictates the rolling circumference of your wheel.

• The 80 Series: The industry standard for long-haul work, providing a larger air cushion to protect the cargo and the chassis from road vibration.
• Low Profile (55 – 70): Used for “Low-Loader” trailers or specific truck configurations where a lower ride height is needed to increase the internal volume of the trailer.
• JB4 Warning: Always stick to your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended profile. Changing this can result in tachograph errors and potential legal issues during a VOSA inspection.

3. Rim: The Physical Constraint

Our finder categorises tyres by the three main UK commercial sizes: 17.5, 19.5, and 22.5 inches.

• 22.5″: The standard for heavy HGVs and full-sized trailers.
• 17.5″ & 19.5″: Found on mid-sized “Urban” delivery trucks and specialised low-deck trailers.
• The Fit: Ensure you select the rim size that matches your existing wheel hardware exactly; there is no margin for error here.

4. Brand: Strategic Investment

At JB4, we offer a range of brands to suit different business models:

• Tier 1 (Bridgestone, Hankook): These brands invest heavily in R&D. If you are doing 100,000+ miles a year on motorways, the fuel savings and “retread-ability” of these premium casings often result in the lowest total cost of ownership.
• Tier 2 & 3 (Laufenn, Giti, Aurunze): Perfect for regional work, short-term leases, or environments where “sidewall trauma” (kerbing/debris) is more likely to kill a tyre before the tread wears out.

5. Pattern: Axle-Specific Engineering

This is the final and most important filter. The “Pattern” determines how the tyre interacts with the road.

• Steer Patterns: Look for straight, longitudinal grooves. These are engineered for directional stability and to prevent “tramlining” on UK motorways.
• Drive Patterns: These feature rugged blocks or “lugs.” They are designed to bite into the road to transfer torque from the engine to the tarmac. In the UK, look for drive patterns with high “Wet Grip” ratings for year-round reliability.
• Trailer Patterns: These are built with specialised “anti-scrub” compounds in the shoulders to withstand the dragging forces of tight turns in loading bays and roundabouts.
